President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) convened a limited Cabinet meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 to discuss the acceleration of Papua's development. The meeting concluded on the urgent need to improve the quality of education, healthcare, and security in Papua.

Minister of National Development Planning, Suharso Monoarfa, announced plans to expedite and enhance welfare programs in Papua. This endeavor will be undertaken in collaboration with Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, who chairs the Steering Board for the Acceleration of Special Autonomy for Papua (BP3OKP).

"We will gradually implement various welfare approaches, including education and healthcare, with the allocated budget already included in relevant ministries and agencies," Suharso said after the meeting.

The project to accelerate Papua's development is governed by Presidential Regulation No. 121/2022 on the Steering Board for the Acceleration of Special Autonomy for Papua.

Article 3 of the regulation mandates the Papua Steering Board to evaluate and coordinate the acceleration of development and the implementation of Special Autonomy in the Papua region. Additionally, Suharso emphasized that the government is paying special attention to the security situation in Papua.

"We are particularly focused on security approaches to ensure peace in Papua," he said.

Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), Kartika Wirjoatmodjo, revealed that the limited meeting also addressed the budget for special operations in Papua. As of March 2023, the government has allocated a budget of Rp1,036 trillion (US$64.4 billion). This funding has contributed to improving infrastructure in Papua through the construction of the Trans-Papua road spanning 3,462 kilometers and roads along the border totaling 1,098 kilometers.

The government has also constructed the 1.3-kilometer Youtefa Bridge in Jayapura and renovated the Domine Eduard Osok Airport in Sorong. In addition to Suharso and Kartika, other state officials present at the meeting included Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, Indonesian Military (TNI) General Chief of Staff General Bambang Ismawan, Head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Budi Gunawan, and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo.
