State-owned gas distribution company PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) has supplied natural gas up to 9.49 billion British thermal units per day (BBtud) to the Manyar Smelter, the largest single-line copper smelter in the world operated by PT Freeport Indonesia.
The supply of natural gas to Freeport Indonesia is a follow-up to a long-term contract agreed upon in a gas sales agreement (GSA). The GSA was signed by Rosa Permata Sari, Director of Strategy and Business Development at PGN, and Clayton Allen Wenas or Tony Wenas, President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia.
Rosa said that PGN will maintain service performance in providing adequate gas infrastructure and ensuring supply resilience to optimize the added value of natural gas.
"The Gas subholding fundamentally supports the government's efforts to advance the national industry. This cooperation is significant for us because PT Freeport Indonesia is a consumer with significant gas absorption," Rosa said in a press statement on Monday, May 6, 2024.
The supplied natural gas will be allocated to the smelter, acid plant, and precious metal refinery (PMR) sectors.
"The added value of more efficient and environmentally friendly natural gas can support PT Freeport Indonesia in implementing energy-saving technologies and achieving synergy in reducing greenhouse gas emissions," Rosa said.
PGN also supports PT Freeport Indonesia's commitment for responsible environmental management by providing natural gas, which is environmentally friendly and contributes to sustainable business development.
