Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, openly discussed the Indonesian government's plan to import 60,000 tons of lithium from Australia. This move is aimed at supporting Indonesia's ambition to become the "King" of electric vehicles worldwide.

"In our previous meeting, we discussed importing 60,000 tons of lithium to be processed in Morowali, starting next year. We asked them again if we could import another 60,000 tons, with China providing the technology," Luhut stated on Monday (10/7/2023).

Furthermore, the Indonesian government has also requested Australia's involvement in the domestic production of electric vehicle batteries to promote downstreaming.

"We have already imported 60,000 tons of lithium, and the smelting process will begin in Morowali, probably early next year. We asked them if we could import another 60,000 tons, with their participation," Luhut explained at the Economic Update event.

With this addition, the processing and refining facilities (smelters) will be jointly owned by Indonesia and Australia. As for the processing technology, it is expected to be provided by China.

"The Prime Minister has approved it because I conveyed the bilateral request from the President," he added.

Luhut added that the Australian Minister for Industry will be visiting Indonesia on July 24 to observer progress on downstreaming efforts and will discuss further efforts related to collaboration between both countries.
