Shell Indonesia has commenced the construction of its first Grease Manufacturing Plant (GMP) in Indonesia, anticipated to be the third-largest grease manufacturing facility owned by Shell globally.

Jason Wong, Global Executive Vice President of Shell Lubricants, announced that the plant will have a production capacity of up to 12 million liters of grease per year and will cater to the growing demand for products in Indonesia.

"Today, we are announcing the groundbreaking of our first Grease Manufacturing Plant [GMP] in Indonesia. This manufacturing facility will have a total production capacity of 12 million liters per year," Jason in Jakarta on Monday, March 4, 2024.

This latest manufacturing facility by Shell Indonesia will complement the lubricants plant, known as the Lubricants Oil Blending Plant (LOBP), located in Marunda, Bekasi, West Java. The LOBP Marunda currently has a capacity of 136 million liters per year. Shell is currently in the process of expanding its plant to produce 300 million liters of lubricants per year.

Jason explained that the production of Shell grease lubricants will incorporate the latest technologies, including contact reactors, to enhance production speed and efficiency. While he did not provide specific investment figures, he emphasized Shell's commitment to meeting the increasing needs and demands of consumers in Indonesia.

"The rapid economic growth in Indonesia underscores the importance of lubricant products, including grease, in supporting the development of various industrial sectors," he said.

The new plant will produce grease products under the Shell Gadus brand, widely used in various applications such as bearings and gearboxes. Additionally, the plant will have the capability to produce high-quality grease products in various packaging formats, including drums, pails, and fluid bags.

Shell Gadus is recognized for its ability to meet the needs of various industries, including general manufacturing, pulp and paper, steel, smelting, electricity, fleets, construction, and mining.
