Pupuk Indonesia to build 2 glass raw material plants with a capacity of 600,000 tons
State fertilizer company PT Pupuk Indonesia has planned for the construction of two soda ash plants, each with a capacity of 300,000 tons, to supply raw materials for the glass and ceramic industries. Currently, domestic soda ash is entirely imported, with demand reaching 1.2 million tons per year.
To address this, PT Pupuk Indonesia plans to build one plant in Bontang, East Kalimantan, and another in Gresik, East Java, both with a capacity of 300,000 tons per year. Soda ash is a byproduct of natural gas processed into ammonia after LNG processing.
The construction of these two plants will be carried out gradually, with the first phase starting by the end of 2024. Additionally, PT Pupuk Indonesia plans to build two nitrate-based NPK fertilizer plants in Bontang and in Cikampek, West Java, to meet domestic demand currently fulfilled through imports from Europe and China.
The Bontang plant, with a capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year, will be built by PT Pupuk Kaltim, while the Cikampek plant will be constructed by PT Pupuk Kujang, also with a capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year. The second phase of the Bontang NPK plant construction will commence in 2026 after the completion of the first plant, resulting in a total production capacity of 200,000 tons per year for PT Pupuk Indonesia in the coming years.
