State electricity company PT PLN, through its sub-holding company PLN Nusantara Power, has connected the 10-megawatt (MW) phase I of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) solar power plant to the transmission network on February 29, 2024. The IKN project has a total solar power capacity of 50 MW.
PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, said the company is committed to supporting the government's efforts in developing IKN with a concept of a smart, beautiful, and environmentally friendly forest city.
In addition to harnessing solar energy, PLN plans to leverage the hydro potential from rivers and lakes surrounding the IKN.
"We are all-out in supporting green electricity infrastructure in IKN. This will be the best capital city where everything will be based on state-of-the-art technology, clean energy sources for IKN supported by smart technology based on Artificial Intelligence (AI)," he said, on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
Ruly Firmansyah, President Director of PLN Nusantara Power, said that they were confident that the IKN solar power plant will operate on time and be utilized to provide electricity for the capital city during the celebration of the 79th Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.
"The synchronization of the first phase with a capacity of 10 MW has been carried out according to the schedule. We will proceed with the synchronization for the remaining 40 MW and conduct trials until this solar power plant can operate commercially to supply electricity to IKN," said Ruly.
The 50 MW solar power plant in IKN is a pioneer in renewable energy power plants in the IKN area.
The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted by President Joko Widodo in November 2023.
The solar power plant is built on an 80-hectare land with 21,600 solar panels and is capable of providing employment opportunities for local workers, with up to 337 employees involved.
IKN will not rely on coal
Previously in 2022, Arifin Tasrif, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) announced that the government prepared the provision of green energy for the electricity supply of the IKN.
Until 2024, it is projected that installed Renewable Energy Power Plants (EBT) in the IKN area will reach at least 130 megawatts (MW).
According to Arifin, the IKN region has diverse sources of renewable energy, including solar, wind, and clean energy such as gas.
"Earlier, we suggested that we prioritize clean energy. By 2024, an estimated 130 MW can be installed," said Arifin, on July 20, 2022.
With this development, Arifin ensured that the electricity supply for IKN Nusantara would no longer rely on coal-fired power plants. However, fossil fuel power plants will be utilized as a backup if necessary.
"We will not use [coal]. As an alternative, if fossil fuels are needed, we will use gas, which is cleaner than coal," he added.
