Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC) will increase its investment in Indonesia by IDR 5.7 trillion to increase production capacity in 2024.

Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, the Minister of Industry, said that MMC will increase production capacity to 250,000 units next year with the latest investment funds. Throughout 2023, Mitsubishi is targeting investment realization of up to IDR 12.3 trillion.

"We really appreciate Mitsubishi, which has committed to play a role in developing a competitive automotive industry ecosystem in Indonesia. Moreover, Mitsubishi has also made Indonesia part of its production base," said Agus, on August 9, 2023.

He said MMC was preparing to produce electric cars based on the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) at its production facility located in Bekasi, West Java, which will start in December 2023.

On the other hand, the government is determined to create a conducive investment climate for automotive industry players who wish to invest in Indonesia.

"Previously, CBU imports had import duties and VAT, and (now) are being planned to be zero. This facility is provided to investors who want to build factories in Indonesia to produce electric vehicles. We are optimistic that if implemented, it can spur investment while also increasing interest in using electric vehicles domestically," he said.

In Agus's opinion, MMC can use this fiscal facility, it is believed that it will benefit the company in introducing its new products in the electric vehicle segment.

"Currently, the formula for incentives is being discussed by the government. There are two approaches, namely the amount of CBU imports will be adjusted to the investment value, and the second is based on production," he said.

MMC will later produce the initial electric vehicle product to be marketed in Indonesia in the form of the Minicab-MiEV electric commercial vehicle.

"The company has carried out a pilot project with four companies, namely PT Pos Indonesia, PT Haleyora Power, Gojek and DHL Supply Chain Indonesia to use Mitsubishi Minicab-MiEV type vehicles commercially," he said.

Meanwhile, Takao Kato, President & CEO of MMC said, Indonesia has a large market share for Mitsubishi. In fact, according to him, compared to the Japanese market itself, Mitsubishi's sales in Indonesia are bigger.

"Mitsubishi is diversifying its products by issuing Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) vehicles, as well as Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) to support the Indonesian government's program to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060," said Takao.

In addition, Mitsubishi will focus on producing the xEV type car model, and plans to produce vehicles for the domestic market, but also for exports.
