PT Elnusa Petrofin, a subsidiary of PT Pertamina and SNF SAS of France have joined forces through a cooperation agreement to secure exclusive distribution of the Polymer Injection Enhanced Waterflooding project from 2023-2026.

According to the President Director of Elnusa Petrofin Aditya Budi Prabowo, this strategic partnership signifies an advancement in the oil and gas industry.

By synergizing the expertise and resources of both Elnusa Petrofin and SNF SAS, the objective of the cooperation is to optimize oil production and effectively meet the escalating energy demands in Indonesia.

Supporting Indonesia’s energy goals

The partnership forged between Elnusa Petrofin and SNF SAS aligns with the shared vision of implementing Polymer Injection Enhanced Waterflooding within the Pertamina Group’s operational areas.

The successful implementation of the Polymer Injection Enhanced Waterflooding project is poised to set a new standard for future endeavors in Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (C-EOR), particularly within Indonesia.

The Polymer Injection Enhanced Waterflooding project will also improve oil recovery and optimize production in oil fields. This technology, widely implemented in various locations, aims to support the Indonesian Government’s initiative of achieving a daily oil production of 1 million barrels by 2030.

EOR significant impact on oil recovery in Indonesia

As known, the Energy Ministry sets a target to increase oil and gas reserves by 5 to 10 percent through EOR implementation.

Currently, Indonesia boasts 2.4 billion barrels of proven oil and gas reserves, accompanied by an upstream oil and gas recovery factor of 33 percent. Furthermore, the strategic adoption of EOR has the potential to elevate this recovery factor to a range of 40 to 45 percent.

In 2018, Pertamina initiated the use of polymer flooding for EOR at Tanjung Field, South Kalimantan. The company revealed that EOR implementation could yield a substantial increase in oil extraction, ranging from 30 to 60 percent, surpassing the recovery rates achieved through primary and secondary methods, which ranges from 20 to 40 percent.

Moreover, EOR is not solely focused on production increases, but also can extend the production life of an oil and gas field.
