Indonesia is set to emphasize its achievements in carbon emission reductions and the development of carbon trading mechanisms at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, slated for November 2024.

Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, highlighted that Indonesia's delegation, under the leadership of Special Presidential Envoy for Energy and Environment Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, will promote climate diplomacy efforts that reflect the country’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

"Our efforts focus on enhancing all sectors to meet greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, including the establishment of a carbon trading framework," Hanif said after attending a COP29 preparatory meeting in Jakarta, on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

He also confirmed that Indonesia has submitted its progress on emissions reduction to the UNFCCC Secretariat and will reinforce these achievements in an official address at COP29.

Hashim Djojohadikusumo, appointed by President Prabowo Subianto as head of Indonesia’s delegation and Special Presidential Envoy, expressed optimism about the delegation’s goals.

"The preparation is robust, and I am confident that Indonesia's objectives will be achieved," Hashim said.

In addition to emissions reduction, Indonesia will address climate financing at COP29. In the previous COP28 in the UAE, Indonesia secured a commitment of US$83 billion for climate initiatives.

Hanif described this funding as "a significant, yet long-term journey," and vowed to pursue further financial support.

Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets are a core focus, with an aim to reduce emissions by 31.89 percent independently and by up to 43.2 percent with international support by 2030.

Additionally, carbon trading initiatives are a central topic for bilateral discussions, reflecting Indonesia’s strategic climate goals on the international stage.
