PT PGN (PGAS) as the Gas Subholding of Pertamina is preparing for the development of a household gas network program to support the provision of clean energy in the Nusantara Capital (IKN).

Speaking to the media during her visit to IKN along with the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agncy (BPH Migas) last week, Director of Sales & Operations at PT PGN, Ratih Esti Prihatini, expressed PGN’s readiness to synergize in the development of household gas networks. The government has entrusted the development of household gas networks to Pertamina as the Oil and Gas Holding Company in the Core Government Center (KIPP) of the IKN.

The household gas network will be established in official residences of ministers and employees in IKN. In the initial phase, household gas connections in IKN are prepared for 166 towers of government employee residences and 34 ministerial residences.

“We are ready to be part of the solution for the utilization of clean energy in IKN, to expand the use of natural gas for a greener environment and to optimize the multiplier effect for the environment and society,” Ratih said in a media statement on Wednesday, January 30, 2024.

The development of household gas network in IKN is planned to be carried out gradually. In addition to government official residences, the gas distribution network is also intended for commercial purposes, government buildings, and other facilities. The natural gas distribution pipelines will be placed in public or multi-utility tunnels. The multi-utility tunnel will be built by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

Natural gas will be supplied in compressed natural gas (CNG) sourced from Balikpapan or Bontang in East Kalimantan. Currently, PGN has been conducting construction activities in the field and is targeted to be completed by June 2024.

PGN’s support for providing natural gas to IKN is based on the vision of providing clean energy in the new capital city as stipulated in Law No. 3/2022, which is to use a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen as the source of city gas. PGN’s portfolio in East Kalimantan will continue to be developed so that it can reach IKN and support the buffer zones of IKN to further expand and optimize the use of clean energy.

One of these efforts is managed by PGN through PT Pertagas, which oversees the integrated distribution of gas through the 78-kilometer Senipah-Balikpapan Natural Gas Transmission Pipeline. In the future, a new distribution network will connect the IKN gas distribution network with the Senipah-Balikpapan pipeline to ensure more reliable gas distribution.
