State electricity company PT PLN has partnered with Hong Kong-based energy company GD Power Overseas Investment Company Limited (GD Power) to develop a floating solar power plant (PLTS) in Karangkates, East Java, with a capacity of 129 Megawatt peak (MWp).

PLN’s President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, highlighted the significance of this collaboration in advancing green energy initiatives in Indonesia. The partnership aims to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, reflecting a shared commitment to renewable energy.

“Both companies have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to construct the Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant with a capacity of 129 MWp,” Darmawan said in a statement on Friday, August 16, 2024.

The Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant is projected to produce up to 219 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually, catering to the energy needs of Java Island, particularly East Java.

This project is also expected to enhance renewable energy capacity and reduce carbon emissions by up to 180,000 tons of CO2 per year.

Darmawan emphasized that the development of the Karangkates PLTS not only provides affordable clean energy, but also supports national economic growth, job creation, poverty alleviation, and overall community welfare.

“This project is not just about supplying clean energy but also maintaining economic growth momentum, creating more jobs, reducing poverty, and enhancing community welfare,” he said.

Zhao Zhigang, Authorized Representative of GD Power Hong Kong Overseas Investment Company Limited, emphasized the global priority of clean energy development and utilization.

The challenges of climate change and resource limitations necessitate an accelerated transition to sustainable energy.

“PLTS, as a crucial part of this solution, is key to future energy development due to its environmental friendliness, abundant resources, and widespread deployment,” Zhao said.

Zhao affirmed GD Power’s readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant project.

“We will ensure that this project is executed with the highest quality standards and contributes significantly to Indonesia’s economic development and energy transition,” he added.
