The government plans the allocation of funds up to Rp19.5 trillion (US$1.2 billion) to revitalize 9,512 schools, currently undergoing synchronization among ministries involved.

“We are currently recording good governance and its regulations so that all activities in the school revitalization projects can progress well and accordingly,” Pratikno, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, said on Monday, December 30, 2024.

He is optimistic that the program could start in early 2025. On the other hand, Abdul Mu’ti, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, said the ministry had allocated funds up to Rp17.1 trillion to revitalize 9.300 schools. Initiallly, the revitalization projects were to be carried out by the Ministry of Public Works before being handed over to Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

“In accordance with the president’s direction, the revitalization of conventional schools is carried out independently by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. The mechanism for self-managed school revitalization is currently being prepared by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education,” Diana Kusumastuti, Deputy Minister of Public Works, said on Monday, December 30, 2024, as quoted by Katadata.co.id.

Mu’ti plans to prioritize schools that are heavily damaged during recent natural disasters. However, the locations of schools are spread across Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works is still responsible for revitalizing 212 madrasahs (Islamic schools) with funds reaching Rp2.4 trillion. With Madrasahs being the highest in cost of revitalization reaching Rp11.32 billion per madrasahs, while conventional schools only reached Rp1.83 billion in 2025. Diana said the funds for revitalization still depend on the level of destruction of each madrasahs.

She said the madrasah revitalization work would still go through an auction process. However, Diana did not explain further when the auction for the project would be carried out.
