Prabowo meets President Putin, discussing strengthened bilateral cooperation

Defense Minister and President-elect Prabowo Subianto met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, discussing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in various sectors.

A media statement released by the Indonesian Defense Ministry on Wednesday, said that Prabowo opened the discussion by highlighting the long-term friendly relations
and historical support provided by Russia (formerly the Soviet Union) to Indonesia, including infrastructure and military assistance, and emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Russia.

The main topic of bilateral discussion, however, was on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in food and energy security, education and tourism.

“The main agenda discussed was on food and energy security, including increased bilateral collaboration in utilization of nuclear energy,” Prabowo said as quoted in the defense ministry’s media release.

“Also discussed were cooperation in the education sector, where Indonesia plans to start a massive scholarship program for Indonesian students to study overseas, particularly on medical sciences, as well as collaboration on tourism development,” the minister added.

Lastly, Prabowo also told the Russian president of his intention to continue and expand bilateral cooperation in defense sector.

“I would like to invite the Russian delegation to our defense conference and defense exhibition to be held in Jakarta in November 2024,” he said.
