State power utility company PT PLN has signed four more strategic partnerships with international stakeholders during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.

These collaborations, focused on funding, technology, and human resource development, aim to accelerate Indonesia’s transition toward sustainable energy self-sufficiency.

The partnerships involve United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF), Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, Transportasi Gas Indonesia (TGI), and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). Previously, Germany’s Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW).

Key collaborations to support Indonesia’s green energy goals

  1. Financing and Capacity Building with UKEF

PLN is working with UKEF, the UK government’s export credit agency, to explore renewable energy project financing opportunities in Indonesia. This includes developing transmission networks to integrate clean energy sources and enhancing PLN employees’ capacity in renewable energy management.

“This collaboration strengthens Indonesia’s ability to develop and manage green energy infrastructure,” PLN CEO Darmawan Prasodjo said on Monday, November 18, 2024

  1. Green Energy Projects with KfW

PLN has partnered with KfW to finance energy transition projects, including pumped storage hydropower plants and green energy transmission networks. The agreement also includes a grant to conduct Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for clean energy projects.

“These projects will stabilize power supply while reducing reliance on fossil fuels, particularly during peak demand,” Darmawan noted.

  1. Green Hydrogen Development with Sembcorp and TGI

Through a Joint Development Framework Agreement, PLN, TGI, and Singapore-based Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd will develop a green hydrogen transportation project from Sumatra to Singapore. The initiative will explore utilizing TGI’s pipeline infrastructure to bolster cross-border energy trade and hydrogen production capacity in Indonesia.

“This project underscores PLN’s role in advancing the regional hydrogen ecosystem and diversifying green energy sources,” Darmawan said.

  1. Expanding Renewable Energy Access with GEAPP

PLN and GEAPP launched the “Renewable Energy Access for Last Mile” program, which aims to improve renewable energy access for remote islands in Indonesia while promoting diesel-to-renewable energy conversion.

“This collaboration addresses energy access challenges in isolated areas, supporting Indonesia’s commitment to equitable and sustainable energy for all,” Darmawan said.

These initiatives align with Indonesia’s long-term vision to reduce emissions and achieve energy sustainability. By leveraging international partnerships, PLN aims to accelerate renewable energy adoption, enhance cross-border energy cooperation, and foster sustainable development in remote areas.

“PLN remains committed to advancing green energy solutions, ensuring a just and inclusive transition for Indonesia’s energy future,” Darmawan concluded.
