Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia has proposed to Mary Ng, Canadian Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade, and Economic Development joint cooperation for the development of hydroelectric and nuclear power plants in Indonesia.
Bahlil said that Indonesia is working on the Kayan Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA) project in Kalimantan with a capacity of 12 gigawatts (GW). He also briefed the Canadian minister of the Papua PLTA with the same capacity.
“This is a great opportunity to support the energy transition,” he said on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Bahlil also targeted the potential for cooperation with Canada in the nuclear sector, citing Canada as one of the leading countries in nuclear development.
He said that the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has approved the use of nuclear power in Indonesia, and is targeting completion in 2025.
Bahlil on the other hand also emphasized the importance of cooperation for Indonesia’s increasing energy needs. Indonesia’s electricity needs currently reach 91 GW with economic growth below 6 percent.
“President Prabowo Subianto’s target for future economic growth is 8 percent, so we need an additional 61 GW to support that target,” he said.
Bahlil also told Mary Ng that energy transition is the main focus of the Indonesian government, with a target of 60 percent new renewable energy in the 2025-2033 period.
On the same occasion, Mary emphasized her support for the sustainable energy transition in Indonesia. Canada is committed to supporting a just and sustainable energy transition in Indonesia that is substantial.
“This includes our global climate funding of 5.3 billion Canadian dollars, including Indonesia over the past five years,” she said.
As part of this funding, Canada also supports major projects with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), such as the Sarulla geothermal power plant in North Sumatra, as well as wind and solar power plants in South Sulawesi and Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
She said that Canada is proud to be a partner in the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), which aims to mobilize public and private financing to support Indonesia’s energy transition.
