The Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) and Oil&Gas Contractor INPEX Masela, LTD., a subsidiary of INPEX Corporation (INPEX), met along with the Maluku Provincial Administration on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, to discuss measures to develop the Abadi Gas Field Project in Masela Block.

The Abadi Gas Field in the Masela Working Area, which is included in the National Strategic Projects (PSN), is located approximately 180 km off the coast of Yamdena Island in the Arafura Sea with a sea depth of 400-800 meters.

As one of the National Strategic Projects in the energy sector, this project plays an important role in realizing the ideals of energy security for Indonesia by providing clean energy. The production capacity is estimated to reach 9.5 million metric tons per annum (MTPA) of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of pipeline gas, and around 35,000 Barrels of condensate per day (BCPD).

Head of the Formality Division of SKK Migas, George N.M. Simanjuntak, said the Abadi Masela project is expected to be one of the backbones in achieving the oil&gas production increase target set by the government and contribute to achieving the long-term plan (LTP) target, namely oil production of 1 million barrels per day (BOPD) and gas of 12 billion cubic feet per day (BSCFD).

George emphasized that collaboration and synergy of all stakeholders must continuously improve so that this project can be completed on time. He cited that INPEX is currently preparing detailed survey work (Front End Engineering Design/FEED), completing the Environmental Impact Analysys (AMDAL) process, conducting surveys and important studies for these purposes and releasing forest areas for the construction of an onshore LNG plant in Tanimbar, Maluku.

“We, along with INPEX Masela, LTD., express our gratitude for the support provided by the Maluku Provincial Administration and the administrations of the Tanimbar Islands Regency and the Maluku Barat Daya Regency in supporting the development of this project,” he said.

SKK Migas ensures that INPEX is currently working to accelerate the development of the Masela LNG Project. “We hope that the support that has been given can continue,” he added.

Vice President of Corporate Services – INPEX Masela, LTD., Henry Banjarnahor, said  INPEX is currently conducting a G&G survey and preparing for the FEED work.

He cited that INPEX is currently also applying Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) technology since the beginning of production in support of the government’s efforts to achieve Indonesia’s net zero emission target in 2060.

He also cited that the AMDAL document has been completed and is awaiting approval from the Ministry of Environment.
