The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has recorded extraordinary achievement in the coal sector throughout 2024, with national coal production reaching 830.48 million tons, exceeding the target set at 710 million tons.

The realization is equivalent to 116.97 percent of the planned plans, making it the highest record in Indonesian history.

This data was obtained from the Indonesian Minerba One Data (MODI) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

“Production plan is 710 million tons. Production realization is 830.48 million tons, 116.97 percent of the plan,” Modi reported as quoted on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

Of the total production of 830.48 million tons, 431.14 million tons or around 52 percent were sold to the international market. Nevertheless, this export figure is still below the target set at 490 million tons. The rest is allocated to the domestic market, including to fulfill domestic obligations (Domestic Market Obligation/DMO).

Coal production in 2024 recorded an increase of 7.13 percent compared to the previous year. In 2023, coal production reached 775.18 million tons, which at that time was also recorded as the highest production of all time. With a higher 2024 achievement, Indonesia has again set a new record in coal production.

This surge in production shows the ability of the Indonesian coal industry to continue to meet market needs, both domestic and international. However, this increase in production also needs to be balanced with a sustainable resource management policy to maintain a balance between exploitation and environmental sustainability.

This achievement reinforces Indonesia’s position as one of the main players in the global coal industry. In the future, the government is expected to continue to encourage innovation and efficiency in the energy sector, while maintaining a commitment to the transition of sustainable energy.
