PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has addressed claims of a ransomware attack, assuring customers that their data and funds remain secure.

The speculation began after an Instagram account, MrBert, referenced information from Falcon Feeds.io, claiming that BRI had been targeted by Bashe Ransomware. The report surfaced on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

BRI’s Director of Digital and IT, Arga M. Nugraha, confirmed in a written statement shared on BRI’s official X (formerly Twitter) account that the bank’s operations remain unaffected.

“All our transaction services are functioning normally,” Arga said on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

Customers can continue to use BRI’s banking platforms, including BRImo, QLola, and ATM/CRM, without any disruptions.

Proactive security measures

Arga highlighted that BRI’s IT security systems adhere to international standards and are regularly updated to combat evolving digital threats.

“Proactive measures are in place to ensure customer information remains protected,” he said.

The official statement reiterated that safeguarding customer security is a top priority for the state-owned bank.

About ransomware

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that can seize control of computer systems, blocking users from accessing their data unless a ransom is paid.

Earlier this year, a prominent ransomware attack, Brain Cipher, temporarily disabled Indonesia’s National Data Center (PDN) for several days.

While the claimed attack regarding BRI remain unverified, the bank’s swift response and reassurances underline its commitment to maintaining customer trust and ensuring secure banking operations.
