State electricity company PT PLN has again set up collaboration with electric vehicle manufacturers to provide home charging services, securing this time an agreement with BYD Motor, currently the world’s biggest electric vehicel seller, to develop  infrastructure and ecosystems for battery-based electric vehicles.

The agreement was sealed on the sidelines of the annual automotive exhibition Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2024, at JIEXPO Kemayoran, in Central Jakarta, on Sunday, February 25, 2024.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized that in line with Indonesia’s energy transition agenda, PLN is ready to become a catalyst for the development of  green transportation sector through collaboration with various parties. The cooperation with BYD, he said, is one of the company’s concrete steps in supporting the acceleration of the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.

“We all realize how important the role of the transport sector is in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through this collaboration, we are not only committed to supporting the utilization of environmentally friendly technology in the society, but also accelerating the energy transition,” Darmawan said.

PLN Executive Vice President of Retail Sales and Customer Service Tonny Bellamy said the agreement between PLN and BYD shows the commitment of both parties in supporting Indonesia to become a greener country through electric transportation.

The goal is in line with the government’s mandate stipulated in Presidential Regulation No. 55/2019 on the Acceleration of Battery-based Electric Vehicles Program and in Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Regulation No. 1/2023 on the Provision of Electric Charging Infrastructure for Battery-based Electric Vehicles.

“As we know, transportation is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions in Indonesia. Today, carbon emissions from the transportation sector have contributed to more than 280 million tons of CO2 per year,” Tonny said.

He believed that the collaboration between PLN and BYD would present a bundling after-sales service for customers so that they will be more facilitated in their use of electric vehicles.

“PLN really appreciates BYD, and we can collaborate in synergy to realize the battery-based electric vehicle ecosystem to create a greener Indonesia,” Tonny said.

President Director of BYD Motor Indonesia, Zhao Yue said, said he was optimistic about Indonesia’s commitment to jointly embrace energy transition through electric vehicles.

“We really appreciate the signing of the agreement. We are optimistic to work better with Indonesia in developing the infrastructure and the battery-based electric vehicle ecosystems,” Zhao said, while citing that Indonesia is considerably a large and potential market for electric vehicles to continue to grow.

In this agreement, PLN and BYD also plan to conduct a joint study as a basis for implementing a pilot project in developing the provision of infrastructure and the battery-based electric vehicles (KBLBB) ecosystem in Indonesia. Both parties are committed to creating synergies that are mutually beneficial for each party and the entire community.
