Indonesia committed to US$1 B as it fully joins BRICS’ New Development Bank
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto has confirmed that the Indonesian government plans to contribute US$1 billion (Rp16.66 trillion) as an initial capital contribution to support the financial arm of BRICS ‒ the New Development Bank (NDB).
“As Indonesia joins BRICS, we are also joining the New Development Bank, and the government has agreed to provide US$1 billion for investment in the New Development Bank,” Airlangga said during the National Leadership Meeting of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) at The Park Hyatt Hotel in Jakarta on Monday, December 1, 2025.
Indonesia officially became the 10th member of BRICS in January 2025, a status that automatically granted the country a membership in NDB.
BRICS ‒ originally founded by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2009, with South Africa joining a year later ‒ has now expanded to 11 members including Indonesia, with additional participants such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Membership in the NDB grants Indonesia greater access to development financing for national strategic projects. At the same time, BRICS participation opens new market opportunities and cooperation potential with fellow Global South economies.
“We are now members and will actively participate in the preparations of the New Development Bank,” Airlangga added. “With BRICS, we see this as access to a new market and a potential avenue for broader cooperation among Global South nations.”
He previously suggested that Indonesia’s capital payment to the NDB would follow a formula set by the institution. While the total figure was not publicly detailed at that time, Airlangga confirmed that the contribution could be made over a seven-year period.
“The payments can be made over seven years,” he noted briefly at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on March 26, 2025.
