Prabowo signals willingness to set up ties with Israel under two-state framework
President Prabowo Subianto has expressed Indonesia’s readiness to establish diplomatic relations with Israel − on the condition that the country ends its armed conflict with Palestine and adheres to the two-state solution, which envisions coexistence of an independent State of Palestine and the State of Israel and allows both nations to live side by side peacefully.
Prabowo made this statement during a press conference following his bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, May 28.
"Once the State of Palestine is recognized by Israel, Indonesia is ready to recognize Israel and open diplomatic relations," Prabowo said.
The two-state solution has long been viewed as a key path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was initially outlined in the 1993 Oslo Accords, an agreement between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), which laid the groundwork for the establishment of two sovereign states.
Prabowo emphasized that the recognition of Palestinian independence is a fundamental condition for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. At the same time, he acknowledged Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation.
“I stress that we must also recognize and guarantee Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign state, and that its security must also be ensured,” he added.
According to Prabowo, France shares a similar stance with Indonesia in advocating for the resolution of the armed conflict in Gaza.
“France will continue to push for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and call for full humanitarian access,” he said.
