The United Kingdom’s Special Representative for Climate, Rachel Kyte, visited Indonesia on May 8–9, 2025, with a mission to reinforce the newly established UK–Indonesia Strategic Partnership in climate and energy.
Her visit focused on expanding collaboration in areas, such as a Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), high-integrity carbon markets, and green finance.
Kyte held high-level meetings with Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono and Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, where they explored strategies to support Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
She also participated in a forum co-hosted by the UK Government, Standard Chartered Bank, and the International Emissions Trading Association. The discussion centered on scaling up demand for high-integrity carbon credits from Indonesia.
Attendees included Minister of Environment Hanif Faisal Nurofiq, Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni, Presidential Envoy for Energy and Environment Hashim Djojohadikusumo, and Presidential Envoy for Multilateral Trade Cooperation Mari Elka Pangestu, along with OJK (Financial Services Authority) Chairman Mahendra Siregar.
In a separate meeting with Deputy Minister of National Development Planning Febrian Alphyanto Ruddyard, Kyte shared the UK’s experience in cutting emissions by half while maintaining economic growth, offering insights that could inform Indonesia’s own low-carbon development pathway.
Kyte also met with Razib Dawood, Executive Director of the ASEAN Centre for Energy, to discuss UK support for the ASEAN Power Grid − a regional energy integration initiative funded through the ASEAN–UK Green Transition Fund.
“This is my first visit to Indonesia as the UK’s Climate Representative. Indonesia has enormous potential to lead on climate action and play a pivotal role in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement,” Kyte said in an official release on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
She emphasized the importance of working together to develop high-integrity carbon markets, promote green finance, and ensure a just energy transition. The UK, she said, is proud to stand with Indonesia as it crafts innovative, sustainable solutions that support prosperity, innovation, and inclusive growth.
British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, underscored the depth of the growing bilateral relationship.
“This visit reflects the breadth and depth of our cooperation in climate and energy under the UK–Indonesia Strategic Partnership, launched last year by President Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in London,” he said on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Jermey stressed that while climate change is a global crisis, solutions often begin with national leadership and strong international partnerships.
“The UK is committed to working with Indonesia across clean energy, sustainable finance, and carbon markets for the long term. I’m confident we can strengthen our ties as we strive to create a more livable planet and drive economic growth for both our nations,” he added.
