Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, reveals that the government has received offers and designs for the construction of a cable car for domestic transportation.

This project is planned for urban transportation and designed as a feeder between Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and Integrated Highway (LRT). Such as LRT Feeder for LRT Harjamukti - Mekarsari; MRT Feeder for MRT Lebak Bulus - Serpong Area.

"We already have the infrastructure drawings. In the next stage, prospective investors will convey breakthroughs related to this project to us," Dudy said on Wednesday, March 5, 2025.

Dudy stressed that the state will not provide financial support if the private sector is involved in this project. According to him, each cable car project has a potential investment of up to Rp2 trillion (US$122.5 million).

Risal Wasal, Director General of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation, revealed that there are already four countries interested in investing in the construction of cable cars in Indonesia, which not only covers Bogor and South Tangerang, but also several other areas.

"There are at least two other regions requesting the construction of urban cable cars, namely West Sumatra and Malang. The average infrastructure investment in the four regions reaches Rp238 billion per kilometer," Risal said.

He cited that the investment value includes the need for trains per kilometer. With a total investment per 10 kilometers (km), an investment of Rp2.38 trillion is needed.

Operational next year

Risal expressed optimism that the cable car at both points could be operational at least next year as the time from the feasibility study to the completion of construction only took six months.

He ited that the construction of the cable car is faster than other modes of transportation because it requires less land. So, the cable car can use the median of the road as a route. However, the need for durability is still needed for the construction of the station.

He considered that the construction of the cable car could proceed quickly, even though the construction area has a high elevation. Because of the difference in the infrastructure system used compared to the tourist train.
